Math Festival
Friday, February 6th, 6:30 - 7:30pm, Large Multi
All families welcome!

On Friday, February 6, Encinal School will be participating in a school wide Math Festival sponsored by the PTO through the California Mathematics Council.  Our theme will be Algebra!   Each class will have a festival-like math experience that is standards-based and accessible to ALL levels and abilities.  It will be a positive, diverse, hands on and self-motivating experience for all with an emphasis on critical math topics and concepts.
Your teachers will be asking for volunteers on this day, so please let them know if you are available.  Thank you!

The day will be followed with a Night Math Festival for parents and their child(ren).  Please come to this festival-like math experience!  You will leave with an engaging, exciting math booklet (for the first 200 participants). It will surely be a night to remember!

All families members are welcome February 6th, 6:30-7:30 in the Large Multi!
Week of the Family
Week of the Family
January 26-30

What are three of the most critical building blocks for a child's success?
  • Strong family connections
  • Adequate sleep
  • Abundant opportunities for free play
The Week of the Family, celebrated by Laurel and Encinal schools during the week of January 26 will honor all three. There'll be no traditional homework assigned (although students should continue to engage in nightly reading and math fact practice), and we encourage families to enjoy a slower pace in the evenings, reserve time for simple fun, and connect with friends and neighbors. Ask your children what they'd like to do:  play games, roast marshmallows, go for a star-gazing stroll after dinner... the options are endless!
After School Activities

It's time to enroll in winter after-school activities! Options include the classes listed below and many more. These classees need more students or may be canceled:

  • NEW! Math Wizards (2nd and "motivated and interested 1st graders"): Thursdays 1:45 - 2:45, starts 1/22
  • Gorilla Play Day (K-2nd): Tuesday (NEW DAY) 2:35-3:35, starts 1/13
Find more information about all of the after-school activities offered at Encinal.
Chores for Change
Chores for Change for Books
Encinal Service Project:  Jan. 20th - Feb. 10th
This week, we kicked off a school-wide service project to support the development of the life skills Caring for Others and Responsibility and to make a difference in our local community. Encinal is partnering with a 2nd grade class from Selby Lane, a nearby elementary school that that serves lower income families. Their class is greatly in need of books for students to read at school or borrow to take home. Check out this great video that students saw this week to learn about this important project.

We invite families to support our Chores for Change campaign to allow Encinal students to earn money from chores and other actions to donate to buy books for Selby Lane Elementary. Students can also donate gently used books. Change and books can be brought to your classroom teacher.

Students should have brought home a sample list of chores appropriate for different ages and a "chore chart" to complete with parents.  This is a great opportunity to talk with your child about the role of chores in your family.

This project will help our students to gain a deeper appreciation of the similarities and differences of kids in other communities and provide them a tangible opportunity to practice Caring and Responsibility.

Me to We
Me to We - Sock Drive
Bring donations by Friday, February 13
Dear Encinal Families,

Hello!!! We are a group of 4th/5th graders from the "Me To We" advisory. "Me to We" is an organization that is trying to make the world a better place. We are working on a project that has a goal of collecting 1,000 pairs of new (or clean, gently-used) socks. To reach our goal, we are asking for your support. We would appreciate if each student/family could donate one or more pairs of new or clean, gently-used socks.

Bins for collecting socks are in the halls and in front of the main office. Donations are due by Friday, February 13, 2015.

Warm heart, warm feet!! Thank you for your support,
The "Me To We" 4th/5th grade Advisory
2nd Grade
2nd Grade: Playing with Poetry Open Workshop Demonstration
Thursday, February 5th at 11am, Small Multi
All Second Grade Parents invited!

Encinal's Second Graders are currently participating in  a 10-day action packed residency with a professional actor from Theater Works, called "Playing with Poetry".  This project is generously funded through a Jeanie Ritchie Grant.  The residency addresses multiple intelligences by physically exploring complex concepts.  Students' creativity will be engaged as they bring to life a poem.  The children will develop socially as they work in collaborative groups.  New vocabulary will come to life as they put the words into action.

The theme of Poetry plays right into our Writing Workshop unit on Poetry.  It is a fantastic way to get children excited about poetry. Poetry is a natural way to teach complex syntax and uncommon vocabulary, which play an important role in the new common core standards.

Volunteer
Seeking Motivated PTO Leaders for 2015-16!!
Get involved and make a difference!
Please consider serving on next year's PTO Executive Board and helping us continue all the amazing programs and events that make Encinal so special!

The PTO needs volunteers at all levels of involvement. You can nominate yourself and/or others. Perhaps you even know an incoming Kindergarten parent who would like to get involved! Questions/interest? Please email Diana Haven at PTOparliamentarian@encinalschool.com, before February 1, 2015.
Talent Show
Fourth and Fifth Grade Talent Show
Friday, February 13 (times TBD)
We are eagerly looking forward to our fabulous talent show. We will begin meeting with interested performers (fourth and fifth graders) to start reviewing their acts during the next several weeks.  We can't wait to see this year's group of performers!

We ask that students perform in groups so that we can include as many groups as possible in the short time we have.  We also need to ensure that acts are appropriate for an elementary school audience and reflect our school rules and philosophy of respect, safety, and personal best effort.

Because we do not have time to rehearse all of the acts here at school, we rely on the children to find time on their own to meet and practice.  Please be sure that your child is able to practice regularly. We will be checking in with them periodically to make sure that they are adequately preparing their acts. These meeting times will be announced in advance and are mandatory (unless the child is excused from school that day because of illness or has a field trip). At the final dress rehearsal (the week of the talent show), the acts will need to be performance ready.

Counselor's Corner
Lifeskill of the Trimester: Responsibility
January Focus: Being Responsible for Myself & Having Self Control

Ms. Bloom will be visiting all classes over the next few weeks to kick off learning about our Lifeskill of the Trimester: Responsibility.

Responsibility is taking ownership
of what I say, do, and feel,
while making safe and healthy choices.

The first lesson is Being Responsible for Myself and Having Self Control. Every class will have a Feelings Thermometer that students and teachers can turn to for a quick check of their current emotions. Consider printing this thermometer out to post at home to encourage your student to identify and talk about their feelings.

Students are being taught a variety of Coping Skills. 3rd to 5th graders will do an activity to pick "My Go to 5" for calming down at school and home that they can bring home to share with parents. Try this as a family and have each person pick their "Go to 5" and post in the house.

We're looking for a few good parties
Please consider donating parties, events, or experiences for adults to the 2015 MPAEF auction. Organize an over-the-top bash or an intimate dinner. Donate a Parisian brunch or a yoga workout followed by a healthy breakfast. Love to bake and cook? Get together with your friends and donate a dozen muffins each week for a month, or deliver a themed dinner to the highest bidder's house. You could also teach a knitting class, offer French lessons, or cake decorating - whatever your passion or talent you can be sure someone else would love to learn from you!
Donate an opportunity to inspire, motivate, or entertain our kids!

Kids in Training
Let's show the kids what we do all day! Don't just bring the kids to work, put them to work. Whether you're a scientist, doctor, veterinarian, chef, artist, or public servant, open your doors and call in the class. Teach kids what makes your profession interesting by bringing a few to your office for a few hours or a whole day. Expand their horizons by showing them what you do and how you do it. Trust us, they'll love it!

Events and Experiences for Kids
Whether fitness, art, cooking, or a once-in-a-lifetime experience, donate a chance for kids to take a break from school work and just be kids! Run the track with moms and dads and finish with a custom smoothie. Toss the pigskin or learn to shoot hoops with a Stanford player. Draw unicorns on sun art paper, organize a scavenger hunt, or take them browsing at the local bookstore followed by lunch. Whatever the idea, just organize it and they will come! Kids playing with kids builds lasting memories, as much for the children as for the adults!

Auction item submissions are due Friday, Feb 13th.
Visit the Spring Auction page for more information.
