  Developmental Assets + Project Cornerstone
April's Asset of the Month: Student Engagement

This month we will focus on Student Engagement as the Project Cornerstone Developmental Asset of the month.
Students are actively engaged in learning at school.
Teachers value and support varying learning styles of students.
Activities at Home
We all have different learning styles. Take this quiz at home with your child to find out his or her preferred learning style. There's no 'right' or 'wrong' style! But being aware of your child's instinctive style and exploring how to engage that style is a great way to support his or her engagement in learning, both at school and at home.
Activities at School
"Mini Maker Faire" - At school, students will have the opportunity to express their creativity and personal learning style with a Mini Maker Faire craft project. All students will be given miscellaneous supplies (Q-tips, rubber bands, cardboard, etc.), and will have a short period of time to "make" their own creations. This exercise is a great way for students to practice being free thinkers and share their unique creative visions. Students will display their creations for fellow Encinal students.
Life Skills Book of the Month
Noah Webster and His Words by Jeri Chase Ferris. Webster's American Dictionary is the second most popular book ever printed in English. But who was that Webster? This clever, hilariously-illustrated account shines a light on early American history and the life of a man who could not rest until he'd achieved his dream. An illustrated chronology of Webster's life makes this a picture perfect bi-og-ra-phy [noun: a written history of a person's life].
