Championed by Superintendent Ghysels and facilitated by Assistant Superintendent Burmeister and school principals, MPCSD will be engaged in a four-month long process from August to December to identify our “Strategic Directions” for the next six years. The process began with an interactive “working session” of the Board and District Leadership Team last Wednesday, August 26. The Strategic Directions will become the foundation of the district’s Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) -- the new accountability plan required by the state. Joining the two affords us a great opportunity to streamline and focus districtwide. We are committed to receiving an abundance of input and having the results reflect the priorities of our stakeholder groups. As such, we are advertising the following opportunities for parents to provide their valuable input. If you have any questions about the Strategic Directions process, please don’t hesitate to email Superintendent Ghysels and/or Assistant Superintendent Burmeister.

The PTOs for Encinal, Laurel, Oak Knoll and Hillview, along with the Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation (MPAEF), are working together to make our schools the best they can be for all of our kids. When you support your PTO, you make possible curriculum enrichment, field trips, community building events, and well-supplied classrooms. When you support the MPAEF, you are putting more teachers in our schools – both in the classroom and in specialized areas such as art, music, drama, library and science. All of this makes a real difference in your child’s day and, ultimately, in their education.

Early Dismissal Reminders and Bus Information
The following information pertains to the October 12-15, and December 18, 2015 early dismissal days:
Due to the parent-teacher conferences in October and the winter holiday minimum day on December 18, all Encinal students will be dismissed at 11:20 AM.

The SamTrans buses will not run in the afternoon during these days.  If your child(ren) ride this bus, there is limited seating available on the District Bus during the October days. There will be a cost of 5 dollars for the week. Sign up will be for the full 4 days, and are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Please contact Meg Morley in the school office if you would like to sign up. Make checks payable to MPCSD. District bus routes can be found on the MPCSD District website under transportation.

All other bus services will run the usual routes beginning at 11:20 AM.  See the school website for modified early dismissal day routes.
International Walk to School Day
Wednesday, October 7
Once again, the Menlo Park City School District will be participating in the International Walk to School Day on October 7. Since 1980, students around the world have walked and biked to school to mark this day.

The MPCSD is encouraging students, families, and staff to consider using human power to commute to and from campus that day. In addition to feeling good about helping the environment and getting more exercise, there will also be prizes handed out to students who walk or bike to school!

PTO News
Harvest Festival Thanks
Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make this year's Harvest Festival a rousing success! More than 75 people made oceans of cornmeal pudding and acres of acorn bread, taught the fourth and fifth graders about Native Americans and the Three Sisters, organized and transported and fed 350 students all day long, and in general ensured that everything went smoothly and that everyone had fun. We appreciate all your effort and energy!
Staff Appreciation
Staff Appreciation spans a myriad of events throughout the year to remind our staff that we love all they do for our kids. Participating is easy and varies from donating party supplies to helping cook for luncheons. If you would like to be involved in one (or many) of the events please sign up! This is a meaningful way to show our thanks to our beloved Encinal staff, ranging from administration, teachers, teacher's aides who work behind the scenes for multiple classes, and our front office friends that greet our kids and welcome us on to campus.

Yearbook Ordering
Online ordering is available for the yearbook, starting Monday, 9/28.

If you order between 9/28 - 10/16, you will receive four free icons to add to your yearbook to personalize the book.

Yearbook Cover Art Contest
It's time for this year's Yearbook Cover Art Contest!

Pick up the template and directions in the office starting Monday, October 5 create your cover and return your design to the office by the end of school on Thursday, October 15.  

The top 12 will be posted for students to vote on during lunch from Monday, October 19 thru Wednesday, October 21. Winners will be announced Thursday, Oct 22!

Encinal Book Fair
The annual Encinal Book Fair is coming soon! It will be held during Conference Week from Mon 10/12 - Thurs 10/15 in the Small Multi. Make a plan to stop in before or after your student's conference and stock up on books for your family.
Students will visit the fair with their class during the school day. 2nd-5th graders are welcome to practice their money management and responsibility skills and bring money to school to make purchases during their class visits or before/after school. Families can come in and shop any time the fair is open.
Book Fair Hours:
Mon 10/12: 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM
Tues 10/13: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Wed 10/14: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Thurs 10/15: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM; 5:30 PM-8 PM (Open during our Family Book Night Event, more details coming soon!)
Teacher Wish Boxes
Teachers have the opportunity to create a "wish box" of books they would love for families to buy for their classroom. Please consider supporting your teacher with new books.
Used Book Collection
We will also have a box to collect gently used books. Collected books will be donated to teachers, local families, or other local organizations that are in need of quality books. Make room on your shelves for new books by donating ones you've already read!
Volunteers Needed
The Book Fair is run by Encinal volunteers and proceeds benefit the Encinal PTO. Want to work a shift during the fair or help set up or tear it down? We need you! Sign up for a volunteer slot here.
