SUPPORT YOUR SCHOOL'S PTO AND THE MENLO PARK-ATHERTON EDUCATION FOUNDATION (MPAEF)
The PTOs for Encinal, Laurel, Oak Knoll and Hillview, along with the Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation (MPAEF), are working together to make our schools the best they can be for all of our kids. When you support your PTO, you make possible curriculum enrichment, field trips, community building events, and well-supplied classrooms. When you support the MPAEF, you are putting more teachers in our schools – both in the classroom and in specialized areas such as art, music, drama, library and science. All of this makes a real difference in your child’s day and, ultimately, in their education.

Please support these organizations today. Start by clicking here.

PTO donations are due by September 30. Make your commitment to the MPAEF by November 6.

Principal's Post
Dear Encinal Community,

I hope this message finds our students enjoying time with their friends and family and excited to begin or resume school on Tuesday, August 25th. We will open our doors to over 765 students, and we'd like to especially welcome our kindergarteners and the 60+ new students in the 1-5th grade campus. Our talented teachers and staff are busy planning welcome back activities that will have all students feeling comfortable and excited about their school.

New Bell Schedule
Just a reminder that we have updated our start and end times K-5 for the 2015-16 school year.

New Hires
We welcome several new faces to the Encinal teaching staff. Ashley Ciborowski to Kindergarten Spanish Immersion, Marisela Ghahramani to World Language, Allison Zeiser to 4th grade, Piper Redmond to our music team, Johnathon Coldoff to technology coach, and long term subs Tami Chamness to 3rd grade, and Elizabeth Ellison to 5th. All teachers are coming to us with experience in the classroom and a passion for teaching children! Also, Encinal's amazing crossing guard Trudi Wallick will also join us for lunch time yard supervision!

What's New!
World Language in Kindergarten!
Our new world language teacher, Marisela Ghahramani will be teaching Spanish to our 4 non-immersion kindergarten classrooms 4 days/week in the classroom. Encinal's newest Spanish as a World Language Program for kindergarteners makes language learning a cultural adventure! Students will explore language and culture through lessons that focus on the gradual development of listening and speaking while fostering excitement toward language learning. Maestra Ghahramani will also bring cultural opportunities to all students throughout the school year.

Reader's Workshop
This year we will be rolling out Lucy Calkins' Reader's Workshop from Columbia's Teachers College Reading and Writing Program school wide. We look forward to our ongoing partnership with Teachers College as we continue on site staff coaching throughout the school year with staff developers from Teachers College. We continue our plans to shore up the book titles within each of our classrooms. Our library continues to accept donated gently used children's books throughout the school year. Thank you to the many parents who donated books over the summer to kick off our kindergarten reading program.

Math Expressions
After last year's extensive adoption process with our teachers, the District adopted Math Expressions as it's K-5 math curriculum. All of our teachers will participate in two full days of professional development with this new series throughout the school year.

State Assessments SBAC Assessment Results Grade 3-5
As you have already read in the Superintendent's recent newsletter, parents can anticipate receiving student achievement results from the spring's administration of the Smarter Balanced Assessment (the assessment that replaced the statewide CSTs). Score reports will be sent via USPS in early September once the state releases final results. Initial data indicates that MPCSD schools prepare students well for the rigor of 21st century learning, while also directing us to areas that we can set improvement goals.

Back To School Night Dates/Times
Please mark your calendars for Thursday, September 3rd Grades K-2 5:45-6:45; Grades 3-5 7-8 PM. This is an adult only evening where parents meet their child's classroom teacher. Parents will learn about highlights for the year, along with any information specific to the classroom regarding communication and schedules. We're aiming for 100% parent attendance!

PTO Newsletter
With Opening day right around the corner, this newsletter edition is being sent out earlier to give everyone more time to plan, but from now on, the newsletter will be sent out on Sunday as usual.

Ordering Choice Lunch
If your family is planning on order lunch for your child to pick up at school, follow these steps:
2. Click Sign Up
3. Enter School Code: Encinal

Car Pool Names
PTO volunteers will be handing out car pool name cards on Friday, August 21st at 4 p.m. during class list posting. If names are not picked up, no worries, we will be sending them home with your child(ren) during the first week of school. If families are using the carpool line during pick up, kindly hold up the sign, or place on the passenger side visor for a staff person to read from a short distance.  Staff members call out the child's name as the vehicle approaches.  This helps students be ready to enter the vehicle in a timely manner.  Please note: staff can not read names from a distance if the the name is laying on the dash. We appreciate everyone's cooperation by only entering the carpool lane during your child's dismissal time. Parents may not park in the carpool lane while others are still in the process of picking up their child(ren). All cooperation is greatly appreciated.

On behalf of the hard working Encinal staff, welcome to the 2015-16 school year!

volunteer applevolunteeringVolunteering - You Make a Difference!
Volunteering is a wonderful way to connect to the school, make friends, and help your teacher and student. There is a list of many volunteer opportunities on our website.  If you have questions about volunteering, please email volunteer@encinalschool.com

URGENT: Immediate Volunteer Needs for Fall!!

  • Cultural Arts Day - We are looking for 1-3 co-chairs to help plan and organize volunteers for Cultural Arts Day. This is an entire day dedicated to fun activities, lessons, and performances highlighting the culture of one area of the world. Cultural Arts Day includes guest speakers, music and dancing, food tasting, a cultural museum, crafts, and more. The date and country will be selected by the Chairs. Kids love this program and we rely on parent volunteers to organize it!! If you're interested, please email Jill.
  • Spirit Wear - Sell items (e.g. t-shirts, magnets) imprinted with the Encinal logo at school events; manage on-line store and inventory. This can be a team of 2-3 people. We really need someone by the first day of school! Email Jill if you're interested.
  • After School Sports -
New Coordinator Needed for Next Year
If you are an organized, sports-minded person looking to get involved, we are seeking to train a volunteer to take over the after school sports program! The 2015-2016 school year will be a training year; the coordinators will prepare you to take over in 2016-2017. Contact Jen Nelson if you are interested.
  • Food For Thought - Our Food for Thought program helps to ensure that every student has proper nutrition for a productive day at school by providing baskets of fruit for all of our classrooms. All food is ordered on-line. This volunteer job can be done from the comfort of your own home or office, takes a short time each week. Perfect for someone who wants to volunteer, but doesn't have much time to come to Enicnal. If you're interested, please email Jill!
  • Kids Art - Do you drink coffee out of a mug featuring your child's artwork every morning? Do you purchase holiday gifts for family and friends covered with your child's artwork? This is the job for you! A volunteer is needed to coordinate the kids art program held in October of each year. If you're interested, please email Jill!
  • Head Room Parent Positions Available!
The first day of school is almost here and most Head Room Parent roles are assigned with in the first week.  As HRP, you are the liaison between the teacher and the rest of the class parents.  In consultation with the teacher, you organize volunteers for class parties, field trips and activities.  This is a fantastic opportunity to work closely with your child's teacher and get to know his/her classmates.
If you would like to sign up or just learn more, please contact Teresa R or stop by the HRP table at the Back to School Coffee.

Other Volunteer Opportunities

You can learn more about these and other volunteer positions at the Back-to-School Coffee and Volunteer Sign Up on the first day of school, Tuesday 8/25 from 8:15-10:30 am in the large multi. There will be sign-ups for all of the committees and people to answer your questions. Check out the PTO website for a list of volunteer opportunities and contact information.

Thank you for helping make this a smooth, successful, and activity-filled year for our students!
