Championed by Superintendent Ghysels and facilitated by Assistant Superintendent Burmeister and school principals, MPCSD is engaged in a four-month long process from August to December to identify our “Strategic Directions” for the next six years. The process began with an interactive “working session” of the Board and District Leadership Team on August 26. The Strategic Directions will become the foundation of the district’s Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) -- the new accountability plan required by the state. Joining the two affords us a great opportunity to streamline and focus districtwide. The open input window closed on November 6; however, if you would like to provide additional perspective, please email Assistant Superintendent Erik Burmeister at eburmeister@mpcsd.org. Strategic Directions will be approved at the December 8 Board meeting. The LCAP will be approved in June 2016. If you have any questions about the Strategic Directions or LCAP process, please don’t hesitate to email Superintendent Ghysels and/or Assistant Superintendent Burmeister.

The PTOs for Encinal, Laurel, Oak Knoll and Hillview, along with the Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation (MPAEF), are working together to make our schools the best they can be for all of our kids. When you support your PTO, you make possible curriculum enrichment, field trips, community building events, and well-supplied classrooms. When you support the MPAEF, you are putting more teachers in our schools – both in the classroom and in specialized areas such as art, music, drama, library and science. All of this makes a real difference in your child’s day and, ultimately, in their education.

Please support these organizations today. Start by clicking here.

PTO donations are due by September 30. Make your commitment to the MPAEF by November 6.

Students will have opportunities to complete their hour of code in their classrooms, but are also encouraged to continue their own coding journey by taking advantage of the many online tutorials available all the time at https://hourofcode.com/usNew this year are tutorials based on the very popular sandbox game Minecraft.
If you have any questions please contact Jonathan Coldoff, Encinal's Technology Coach, at jcoldoff@mpcsd.org. He will be helping to bring the Hour of Code to every Encinal student. Happy coding!

Empathy Lessons for November and December
Ms. Bloom continues to visit classrooms with lessons to teach students about Empathy, our Lifeskill of the Trimester.
Empathy means showing you understand and care about how someone else is feeling.
Here are key takeaways she is sharing with each grade. Check out the links at home and start a discussion with your child to reinforce the development of this critical lifeskill.
K-1st graders: Students learn how to look for clues about how someone is feeling by watching their face and body language. They read the book Understand and Care by Sheri Meiners and watched this fun Sesame Street video with Mark Ruffalo.
2nd-5th graders: Be an up-stander, not a by-stander to show your empathy! Students learned 5 practical ways to be an up-stander at Encinal. See all 5 ways here. Students also read Say Something by Peggy Moss and watched this short video with tips on how to be an up-stander.

Reminder to all you 3rd-5th-grade Wordy McVerbisons out there that the Encinal Written Spelling Bee will be given in classrooms on December 1st.
We've included a list of study words here taken from the 2016 Scripps Spelling Bee recommended study list. 25 of these words will appear on the written spelling bee. 5 bonus words will be taken from this list of 450 words. Thanksgiving Break would be a great time to study the words as you recover from turkey comas.

#GivingTuesday on December 1st - $10 Gift to Support the MPAEF Endowment!mpaefgivingtues
On the first Tuesday of December, global charities, families and businesses come together to support #GivingTuesday: a global day dedicated to giving back and encouraging charitable contributions after Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Please join these efforts by making a $10 gift to the MPAEF Endowment - a permanent fund intended to support excellent MPCSD teaching in perpetuity.  The Endowment grows through donations and investment gains, and the income it generates funds professional development, partnerships, and programs to foster 21st century teaching in our schools. http://www.mpaef.org/mpaef-endowment
Our goal is to raise $5000 on today's GivingTuesday which will unlock an additional $5000 of Endowment support from two generous families. So each $1 you donate during the 24-hour campaign, will be matched $1 for $1 up to $5000
Planned gifts and contributions of all sizes are welcome to help grow the Endowment. Please consider making a tax-deductible gift to the MPAEF Endowment for Excellence in Teaching today. To make a donation, click http://www.mpaef.org/donate-to-endowment
