MPCSD Water Conservation
Last week we announced Menlo Park City School District (MPCSD) will be taking measures to save water per Governor Brown's directive for the first ever statewide mandatory water reductions; here is a list of the actions our district is taking:
MPCSD has a modernized landscaping irrigation and plumbing system infrastructure that are very water efficient. The District's landscaping includes drought resistant plants and a synthetic field at Hillview Middle School.
In order to meets the Governor's Executive Order B-29-15 to reduce water consumption, the District is implementing the following water conservation efforts:
  • Water conservation education for student and staff
    • Classroom education and school assemblies
    • Water conservation education through posters and newsletters
  • Landscape water irrigation reduction and shut off
    • Landscape areas to be limited to irrigation only twice a week
    • Irrigation to be shutdown and shutoff in certain area
    • Signs to be placed throughout the campuses informing the public of water conservation efforts
  • Inspection of all school plumbing fixtures and repairs as needed to ensure no water leakage
  • No hard-court or building wash downs
  • Reduced District vehicle and bus washing
  • Meet with local water company personal to explore further water reduction efforts
While MPCSD will do our part to save water, like so many in our State, the cut back in water usage will have an impact on not only the beauty of our landscaping, but it will have a negative financial impact until we recover from the drought.

While the cost to our landscaping depends on how long the drought lasts, we believe that it is essential to take steps to support the conservation of California's vital resource.á Please know that we will continually monitor our measures and will keep you informed.

Social Emotional Learning Update
PERSEVERANCE: Working hard toward a goal, even if it is difficult or you think you might fail.
It's normal to feel sad, angry and frustrated when we try something new. We don't let that stop us. We keep at it, work hard and accomplish the task. There is nothing like authentic pride to keep us motivated to learn and grow.

Class lessons this month are focused on "I can do it" and positive self talk. We all named times that we thought we couldn't do something and when we kept practicing, being persistent and persevering -á we succeeded. Tying our shoes, making our bed, riding a bike, writing our name, reading a chapter book, going across the monkey bars were among the many examples.
It's important to remember the times we try and fail or makes mistakes. It's from these lessons that we learn personal strength and resilience. Letting your kids fail is critical for their journey. We want them to be disappointed sometimes and struggle to overcome these difficult emotions.
Ask your child about a time they persevered and share your own stories. Students will read in class a book to reinforce the lesson of perseverance. K-1st will read I Can Do It! by Pat Thomas and 2nd-5th will read Wilma Unlimited.
Sidewalks on Encinal Avenue
Wouldn't it be nice if there were sidewalks on Encinal Ave. so our kids could have a safe and clear path to school? A group of parents are planning to ask the Atherton and Menlo Park city councils to make this a priority. Let's not wait for some dire incident to address this critical safety issue for our school!

Our message will be louder if you give us your input. So please take a moment and fill out this 5-question survey by April 15. And if you are an Atherton resident, let the City Council know that this is a priority for you.
If you have any questions or are interested in going to a council meeting, please contact Lydia Lee.
