District Announcements
The PTOs for Encinal, Laurel, Oak Knoll and Hillview, along with the Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation, are working together to make our schools the best they can be for all of our kids. When you support your PTO, you make possible curriculum enrichment, field trips, community building events, and well-supplied classrooms. When you support the MPAEF, you are putting more teachers in our schools – both in the classroom and in specialized areas such as art, music, drama, library and science. All of this makes a real difference in your child’s day and, ultimately, in their education.

Please support these organizations today.
Start by clicking here. PTO donations are due by September 24. Make your commitment to the MPAEF by November 20.

Planning the School Commute - Classes resume on Wednesday, August 20 so parents should take a moment to plan their students' trip to and from campus. Now is a good time to make a dry run of your student's bike or walk route and to figure out bus schedules and registration. Click here to start or visit your school's home page and find "Transportation" under the "School Information" menu.
The MPCSD School Board has approved the 2014-15 school calendar. The first day of instruction of the new school year will be Wednesday, August 20, 2014. Click here to view the full calendar.

  • Parents: Visit the Back-to-School Coffee and Volunteer Sign Up, 8:15-10:15 am, in the large multi. Sign up for home-, classroom-, campus-, and community-based volunteer positions.

First Day of School
Where to Go (see school map here)
  • Kindergarten students will meet inside the fenced kinder playground.
  • 1st, 2nd & 3rd grade students will meet on the large blacktop playground in front of the play structure.
  • 4th & 5th grade students will meet in the courtyard in front of the fourth and fifth grade complex near the lunch tables.
  • Look for the cone with your child's teacher's name and line up at the cones when the bell rings.

When to Go
Students may be dropped off as early as 7:45 am when yard supervision begins.

  • K-2: The first bell rings at 8 am. Instruction begins at 8:05 am. School is dismissed at 2:30 pm. (Thursdays: 1:40 pm.)
  • 3-5: The first bell rings at 8:10 am. Instruction begins at 8:15 am. School is dismissed at 3 pm. (Thursdays: 1:20 pm.)

Parents are invited to walk with the line to the classroom, say goodbye at the classroom door, and proceed to the large Multi-Purpose Room for the PTO Back-to-School Coffee and Volunteer Sign-up (8:15-10:15 am).

What to Bring

  • All teachers encourage parents to send well-rested kids to school! Start those bedtime routines a bit earlier the weeks and days leading up to school.
  • Full size backpack labeled with your child's name.
  • A snack in a separate container to eat at the morning recess.
  • Lunch: either sign up and order a Hot Lunch in advance or send along a lunchbox or brown bag with your child's name (and maybe a note or smiley face!). Hot Lunch will begin on the first day of school.
  • Label all of your child's items.
  • Supplies: Teachers will provide a list of suggested supplies at Back to School night.
  • Please pack your patience, too. Encinal is a big school with very little parking. Help your kids have a great start to their day by planning ahead for the best transportation options for your family.

Transportation Options
Fewer cars make Encinal feel welcoming, safe, and easy to approach on foot. Please consider alternatives to single-family car rides for your school commute. The Encinal website has an overview of ways to get to and from school.

Walk & Bike & Carpool
  • Click here for more on getting ready to walk, bike, scooter, or share the driving.
  • This year, carpool cards will have your child's name on them instead of numbers. If you don't pick yours up on Monday 8/18, you can make one and rubber-band it onto the passenger-side sun visor. Click here for an explanation of Encinal's carpool procedures.

Bus Registration

SamTrans Bus
  • Public buses from SamTrans make school runs to serve MPCSD students. Find clear and simple info on taking SamTrans to Encinal by clicking here.

Mobile App

  • MPCSD has groups on KangaDo for each school that are private and registrations are restricted to MPCSD families only. Use iPhone or Android to schedule school trips or send reminders with fellow parents for car pools or groups walks. Click here for more.

Before and After School Supervision
Before-School Supervision
During the school year, yard supervision will be provided for all students beginning at 7:45 am. For safety, please do not drop off your child prior to 7:45 am. Kindergarten children should proceed to the fenced Kinder yard. Students in grades 1-5 should go to the lunch tables or the playground. The field is closed in the morning. The bell will ring five minutes before the start of school to signal students to go to their classrooms.
Grades Start
M - F
M, T, W, F
Primary Grades: K - 2 8:05 am 2:30 pm 1:40 pm
Upper Grades: 3 - 5 8:15 am 3:00 pm 1:20 pm

After School Supervision for Primary Students Waiting for Older Siblings
We encourage families with children in both primary and upper grades to wait until the later dismissal time to pick up children (3 pm on M, T, W and F). Younger siblings who are waiting for third, fourth, and fifth graders will be supervised by school staff. Upper grade children should meet their younger siblings in the small multi-use room at the front of the campus before proceeding to buses, bikes, or the carpool zone. On Thursdays, upper grade children are dismissed earlier than primary students. Older students should arrange to meet younger students in the carpool zone. Questions: contact Pam Garcia in the school office at pgarcia@mpcsd.org or 650-326-5164.
