District Announcements
The PTOs for Encinal, Laurel, Oak Knoll and Hillview, along with the Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation, are working together to make our schools the best they can be for all of our kids. When you support your PTO, you make possible curriculum enrichment, field trips, community building events, and well-supplied classrooms. When you support the MPAEF, you are putting more teachers in our schools – both in the classroom and in specialized areas such as art, music, drama, library and science. All of this makes a real difference in your child’s day and, ultimately, in their education.

Click here to watch a video about how you can support Menlo Park City School District.

Please support these organizations today.
Start by clicking here. PTO donations are due by September 24. Make your commitment to the MPAEF by November 20.

HRPs Needed
School is underway, and some of our classes still need Homeroom Parents. As HRP, you are the liaison between the teacher and the rest of the class parents. In consultation with the teacher, you organize volunteers for class parties, field trips, and activities. This is a fantastic opportunity to work closely with your child's teacher and to get to know his or her classmates.

We need HRPs for the following classes:
2nd grade: Fisher
4th grade: Pindar
4th grade: Sanchez
4th grade: Strohmaier
4th grade: Velasquez
4th grade: Yamada
5th grade: Mendoza
5th grade: Ziff

It would be great to fill these positions before Back to School Night. If you're interested, email HRP Coordinator Teresa R.

Transportation Update
The MPCSD Yellow Bus Is Underway
Thanks to all the families who registered for the MPCSD yellow school bus! There is a full bus for the morning run to Encinal, but there is still space on the Laurel routes and on the afternoon run from Encinal. The yellow bus serves K-2 students primarily. Click here to request a bus pass.

The ASIST Shuttle Is Full
The ASIST Shuttle takes students from Encinal to Laurel after the 3 pm dismissal. The ASIST signups have closed and the shuttle is full. Email Kara to get on the wait list.

Smartphone App For School Commutes
To help parents with planning carpools or requesting a friend to pick up a child in a pinch, KangaDo is a helpful app on Android and iPhone. There are private, restricted-access groups for MPCSD schools on KangaDo, with MPCSD administering the registration. Parents who would like to join one of the school groups on KangaDo must provide both first and last name so we can confirm eligibility.

Free Safety Vests
The MPCSD Safe Routes to School program provides free safety vests for students and parents who walk and bike to school. The improvement in visibility with a vest is remarkable, so please consider picking up vests from your school's office for everyone in your family.

Safe Routes to School
The San Mateo County Safe Routes to School program has funded the creation of maps of recommended routes to our MPCSD schools for students on foot and bike. Many families consult these maps when planning their walk/bike commutes. Please note the maps can only recommend a route that exists among available streets, so some recommended routes may not be suitable for your family. Click here for maps.

Project Cornerstone + Developmental Assets
Asset of the Trimester: CARING

Encinal is continuing our commitment to developing students' social and emotional strength by working with Project Cornerstone's Developmental Assets program. This is a research-driven framework of 41 positive values, relationships, skills, and experiences that help young people thrive.

During the first trimester of school (August to November) we will focus on the core asset of CARING. This includes fostering the values of respect and empathy in students and building a caring school environment. During the first two weeks of school, all students will be given name tags to wear during the school day. They will be encouraged to greet new friends on the playground and in the classroom by name. Name tags also are a great way for teachers, yard duty supervisors, and other staff to get to know students quickly.

Welcome to Encinal School
September 4, 7-8:30 pm

Parents of incoming kindergartners and new students, we are excited to spend a few hours with you at a fellow Encinal family's home. You will meet our principal, Sharon Burns, our Superintendent, Maurice Ghysels, and our MPAEF and Encinal PTO leaders; they'll be talking about our amazing school and our community-funded school district. This evening is all about meeting other parents and hearing about what is happening at Encinal and in our District. We hope that you will join us for drinks, appetizers, and an engaging evening. Please RSVP here.
This is a parent-only event.

M-A Parent Education Series
"The Perseverance Process: Strategies for Strengthening Academic Motivation and Persistence," with Kent Pekel, Ed.D., President and CEO of Search Institute
Wednesday, September 17, 2014, 7-9 pm, M-A PAC

Recent research suggests that persistence or "perseverance" can improve students' academic motivation and increase performance. Many young people lack the motivation and capacity to complete challenging tasks and achieve goals, both inside and outside of school. Fortunately, a growing body of research demonstrates that when schools, youth programs, and families act intentionally to influence motivation and persistence, it is possible to significantly increase both. Join us for an informative, engaging presentation with Dr. Kent Pekel, CEO and President of Search Institute.
Admission is free; please register here.
Family Community Service Opportunities
All Students Matter
Volunteer opportunity in East Menlo/EPA classrooms, one hour/week for the school year, beginning September 22. We are looking for a limited number of parents willing to volunteer in a K-4 classroom. Assist teachers with tutoring and individualized instruction, much like you may have done in your own child's classroom -- but these classes have no parents helping and there's no PTO. The schools are a short drive from Laurel and Encinal. Our organization, All Students Matter, coordinates everything, including an orientation on September 5. To sign up or learn more, please contact Carolyn Blatman at CBlatman@aol.com or visit www.allstudentsmatter.org
An ongoing, updated list of community events, sports, classes and other opportunities for kids, adults and families. Click the underlined link just above to read them all!
