District Announcements
The PTOs for Encinal, Laurel, Oak Knoll and Hillview, along with the Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation, are working together to make our schools the best they can be for all of our kids. When you support your PTO, you make possible curriculum enrichment, field trips, community building events, and well-supplied classrooms. When you support the MPAEF, you are putting more teachers in our schools – both in the classroom and in specialized areas such as art, music, drama, library and science. All of this makes a real difference in your child’s day and, ultimately, in their education.

Please support these organizations today. Start by clicking here. PTO donations are due by September 24. Make your commitment to the MPAEF by November 20.

Together, these organizations help fund...

10. Library books and our librarian, Ms. Healy: Not only do our kids love going to library, it is good for them!
9. Community-building events: Our Fall Family Picnic, Winter Sing, Science Fun Night, Specialists Night, Father-Daughter and Mother-Son Dances, EagleFest, and Open House are just a few of the incredible events that make our Encinal community stronger.
8. School communications: The weekly newsletter, District directory, website, and other types of communications all help you keep on top of everything throughout the school year.
7. Classroom supplies and teacher resources: Our teachers and staff are so appreciative of all that we do to help them so that they can remain focused on their top priority: OUR KIDS.
6. Lunchtime programs: Sports supervision and teacher-directed clubs allow kids to explore different activities during their free time.
5. Art: There may be a future Picasso at Encinal, thanks to Mrs. Noon.
4. Grade-Specific Programs: The PTO and the MPAEF facilitate and fund unique learning opportunities for our Kinders through Fifth Graders, such as Speech & Debate, Playing with Poetry, Around the World, Walk-Through-California, Ship Trip, and Outdoor Ed.
3. Music: Did you know that children who have received music instruction score higher marks on tests of their spatial and arithmetic skills? Encinal's incredible music teachers -- Mr. Ashfield, Ms. Knight, and Ms. Johnson -- make music class more than just a fun class for your child.
2. Field Trips and Assemblies: Our Encinal students already are heading out on the yellow school bus on incredible field trips. And don't forget... these organizations help fund Cultural Arts Day, too!!
1. More classroom teachers: Keeping our class sizes down helps foster and inspire a unique educational relationship between our teachers and their students. Encinal classes have 24 or fewer students.

Imagine your child's day without these people, programs and events. It just wouldn't be Encinal! All of this exists because of both your volunteer and financial support of the Encinal PTO and the MPAEF. Together, we are working to keep Encinal EXCELLENT!

Urgent: PTO Vice-President Needed
The PTO plays a crucial role for Encinal (see Top 10 Reasons) -- but we're functioning without a Vice-President right now. We need your help!! Please consider having coffee with the Co-Presidents to learn about the commitment.

If you are interested in learning the ins and outs of Encinal and the District; developing a close relationship with the school's parents, faculty, and staff; and helping ensure our students continue to benefit from the outstanding programs and activities the PTO organizes -- and if you want to work with a committed, energetic, and fun group of people -- then this is the position for you!! Contact Erin or Winnie at ptopresident@encinalschool.com for more information.

Social & Emotional Learning
Building interpersonal and intrapersonal skills for all students
Ms. Bloom, Encinal school counselor, will visit every class in the month of September to teach a lesson on Mindfulness as a part of the trimester focus on Caring.

Caring for ourselves is key to our success in school, home and in the community. Ms. Bloom will read Peaceful Piggy's Meditation by Kerry Lee Maclean, and show students ways we can calm down, be 'present' and change our moods. Ask your child to share what they learned and what they thought about the Tibetan singing bowl!
What Parents Need to Know About the Common Core
Sunday, October 12, 1:30-5 pm
Hillview Middle School PAC

This conference will give you an insider's view on important developments relating to your children's education. This year, we'll be covering the sweeping changes to the math curriculum led by the Common Core, as well as new student assessments and report cards. There will also be workshops, taught by district teachers and staff, that will give you first-hand knowledge about what happens in the classroom, as well as tips and tricks for helping your student succeed in school. Free childcare will be available for children ages 2.5 through Middle School (special program for Middle School students) to allow as many parents as possible to attend, but advance registration is required in order to take advantage of this option.

"I learned so much by attending the District ParentEd conference -- it was really interesting and inspiring" - Lydia Lee, Encinal parent of 1st and 4th graders

Conference Details are on the MPCSD ParentEd Page - click here.

Join Hillview Principal, Erik Burmeister, as he discusses the difference between how girls and boys react to their changing physical and emotional environments, the way in which our daily routines can affect how our kids grow and perform in and out of the classroom, and the boundaries and limits we can expect to have challenged as our kids strive to become more independent. "The Perseverance Process: Strategies for Strengthening Academic Motivation and Persistence," with Kent Pekel, Ed.D., President and CEO of Search Institute
Wednesday, September 17, 2014, 7-9 pm, M-A PAC

Recent research suggests that persistence or "perseverance" can improve students' academic motivation and increase performance. Many young people lack the motivation and capacity to complete challenging tasks and achieve goals, both inside and outside of school. Fortunately, a growing body of research demonstrates that when schools, youth programs, and families act intentionally to influence motivation and persistence, it is possible to significantly increase both. Join us for an informative, engaging presentation with Dr. Kent Pekel, CEO and President of Search Institute.
Admission is free; please register here.
