Open House and Art Festival
Thursday, May 21; 5:30-7:45 pm
Come to Encinal's annual Open House and Art Festival! See what your child has been doing all year, both in the classroom and in the art studio. Pieces by each student will be on display in the Multi; let your child be your docent!
Art Festival (Large Multi): 5:30-7:45 pm
K-2 Open Houses: 6-6:45 pm
3-5 Open Houses: 7-7:45 pm
Bring a picnic or order a dinner delivery (we have it on good authority that DoorDash will drop off your meal at Encinal). *Due to high demand, there will NOT be any food trucks this year.* However, the PTO is providing milk and cookies for everyone, so stay and enjoy our fabulous school community, celebrate our students and teachers, and welcome the beginning of summer!

PTO Urgent Need: Membership Co-Chairs
Do you want to fulfill your PTO volunteer efforts by the end of October? Then we have the committee for you: PTO Membership! The Encinal PTO is seeking two co-chairs to lead the 2015-2016 Fall Membership Campaign. This is a great committee position to split between two people -- the membership coordinator (implements the Fall Membership Campaign) and the database coordinator (tracks all donations).

These positions are hugely rewarding -- and absolutely crucial -- as you help raise the PTO Budget for the school year!! We can't run Encinal's programs and events without this. Our current PTO Membership co-chairs have graduating 5th graders but will provide job training to the new co-chairs.
If you're interested, please email Jill Vizas, the 2015-2016 PTO President.

What is Encinal Doing to Support My Child's Social Emotional Learning?
If you're an avid newsletter reader -- or if you're that lucky parent with a child who tells you everything when you ask, "What did you do at school today??" -- you might already know about the various social emotional learning (SEL) lessons and programming happening at Encinal.

For the rest of us, this presentation is a quick overview of the vision, strategy, and practical lessons that your child has been learning over this past year. These all strengthen our childrens' social and emotional well-being, as well as foster life skills like Caring, Responsibility, and Perseverance. Research shows that SEL is a critical part of the elementary school experience. Academic learning can't happen if students are not feeling emotionally strong.

Ask your child to demonstrate a specific SEL lessons like the "Four Square Apology" or "Talk It Out."

Questions, feedback, or want to be involved with SEL at Encinal? Contact Encinal Counselor Karin Bloom.
Last Week of Book Drive
The Book Drive ends THIS FRIDAY, May 22. Please consider donating your child's previously enjoyed books to Encinal School's classroom libraries. You'll find collection boxes are by office, library, reading recovery room and where 4th and 5th graders line up in the morning. We are looking for gently-used books at all elementary-school reading levels.

Thank you for helping us expand and diversify our classroom reading resources! If you have any questions, email Emily or Caroline.
Library Announcement
It's amazing how quickly the year has flown! And it's also amazing how library books can sneak into toy boxes, doghouses, or under car seats. Please note that all library books will be due by May 22. We will stop checking out books during library time the week of May 18. Thank you to all our reading Eagles for helping return our treasured books to the library.

The library continues to accept gently used books for classroom libraries as well. Please continue to donate books either in the main office or in the library return bin. It is much appreciated!

Encinal Shout Out: Mother-Son Jamboree
While perhaps not as... sedate... as the Father-Daughter Dance, the Mother-Son Jamboree last Saturday was a resounding success!! Everyone had a wonderful time taking silly photo booth pictures, cheering the lasso artist, dancing the Macarena, and beating the boys in a crazy game of dodgeball. (OK, maybe the boys won.) (But they cheated.)

If you had pictures taken of yourself and your child being lasso'd, you can access them here. Email ptoevents@encinalschool.com to get the site password. Thank you to Henry Wong for taking the portraits!
Many volunteers made this fantastic event possible. Carolyn Lynch, Erin Reyes, Brandy Spier, Teresa Reif, Caroline Bower, Winnie Root, and Sara Davis Teeple organized the Jamboree. Carl Teeple hung up all the lights, and Winnie and Sara worked until midnight on Friday and most of Saturday to get the multi looking amazing. Kenny Root, Julia Holman, Henry Wong, Joanthan Spier, Phil Marsh, Ricardo Reyes, Scott Marshall, and many other dads and siblings helped out at the event itself. Heidi Yamada, Tricia Barr, and Jen Coler came as guests -- and then stayed late to help get the multi back in shape for school on Monday. Thank you everyone!!!

Hillview Site Council Seeking Parent Nominees
The Hillview Site Council, a group consisting of Hillview's principal, teachers, staff, student representatives, and elected parents, is the body responsible for developing and monitoring the School Site Plan. This plan specifies the goals and metrics that drive the school's major decisions on academics, the school environment, social-emotional well-being, technology, and any other significant areas related to the running of the school. The Site Council is also responsible for creating, implementing and evaluating the annual school survey.

The Hillview Site Council has three open parent positions (out of five regular parent positions) for the two-year term of 2015-2016 thru 2017-2018; and one English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) parent position open for this same term. The council meets approximately once a month after school. All meetings are open to the public.

Interested candidates should submit their name, a brief description of their background, and reasons for wanting to serve on the council to Andrea Luskin by Sunday, May 31. Site Council nominees will be voted on at the council's last meeting of this year on Monday, June 8. The meeting will take place from 3:30 to 4:30 in the Hillview front office conference room.

Candidates must be present at the meeting. All parents of Hillview students, or of incoming Hillview students for the 2015/16 school year who are in attendance at the meeting are eligible to vote.

For more information, please contact Site Council Chairperson Andrea Luskin or Principal Burmeister.
