Independent Study Plan

In the event that a student can not attend class, due to travel, the Menlo Park City School District offers an Independent Study Plan option.

Per California Ed Code, students are eligible for an Independent Study if they are going to be absent for a minimum of 3 CONSECUTIVE school days. 14 SCHOOL DAYS is the MAXIMUM amount of time for students to be on Independent Study for an entire school year. ISPs ARE NOT issued for the first 2 weeks of school nor the last 2 weeks of school.

If students do NOT submit completed Independent Study work, their Independent Study will be marked INCOMPLETE and the absences will be considered UNEXCUSED.

To request your child to go on Independent Study, please follow the steps below:

1. Parents complete the Independent Study request form for EACH CHILD at LEAST FIVE DAYS before the first day of the absence. Completing this form will notify Meg Morley that your child will be on Independent Study. She will update attendance records for you. There is no need to report absence on Safe Arrival.

2. Meg Morley will email you and the teacher to provide the list of Independent Study work.

3. During the Independent Study days, students work on the list of activities. Also, the teacher may provide a few additional items for your child to work on while they are on Independent Study, but that is up to the teacher.

4. Upon completion of the Independent Study, please email Meg Morley 2 screenshots or photos as evidence of the Independent Study work completed. We need to file these photo work samples as evidence of the completed ISP for State attendance auditing purposes.

Please feel free to reach out to Meg Morley if you have any questions.
